Heavy Duty and Powerful

As a homeowner, I've long been content with a very nice collection of 18V cordless tools, Ryobi One+, which I would characterize as being great for most around the house projects, but not of professional quality. These Dewalt tools are in a different league in terms of being heavy duty and well constructed. If you go to Dewalt's online user forums, one of the phrases that struck me was someone describing the drill as "maybe too much drill for me." By this the writer meant that this is a drill for someone who needs to screw wood screws, and bore holes, and change bits constantly for a full days work and go home bone tired. It is not a drill you would choose if all you were going to do was hang picture frames. The same goes for all the tools, they are not lightweight, but they are well constructed and powerful. Apparently, previous editions of Dewalt 18V tools were heavier still, but I have no experience with Dewalt prior to this set. And, of course, heavy is not a synonym for sturdy; these tools are sturdy, and that's the important part.I should point out something I learned from online research, the 20-Volt MAX is a marketing term. These are basically 18V tools, the batteries are only 20V anode to cathode while not under load. It's one of those industry terms where one company starts calling their 18V tools 20V, and everyone else follows suit so as not to be disadvantaged. I think Dewalt is pretty much up front about this, and I think they regret this industry trend.The drill is the superstar of this pack. It's a combination hammer drill, drill, and screwdriver, includes a detachable handle, and is what they call the Premium version when sold separately. As an owner of a brick house, I appreciate the need for a hammer drill when I need to drill a hole into solid brick or mortar, frustratingly hard without a hammer drill, easy as pie with one (and the appropriate masonry bit). I am in awe at the build quality of the chuck on this drill, it looks like it should be on a high end drill press and not on a battery powered device; easy to grasp, steel exterior, and bits clamp into immobility with a satisfying series of clicks. The detachable handle comes off with a quick rotation. Operation is convenient with a thumb switch to reverse direction and a multitude of settings: 3 main modes, 3 gear levels and 22 torque levels. With the full battery, the tool is a bit heavy, and it is here homeowners might want to think if they actually need a set of heavy tools for their around the home projects. Not to be confused with the compact hammer drill.I had some left over 3/4" Brazilian cherry flooring which seemed like a good pick due to hardness for a quick race between my old drill and the Dewalt. My old drill worked fine, a 3/4" paddle bit went right through, maybe snagging just a bit, but the new drill just zipped through nearly effortlessly with the same bit. Talk about things that make you say "whoa", so I did it a few more times just for fun.The circular saw is, again, heavy duty for a cordless tool. Changing the blade is reasonably convenient, just locate the button to lock the spindle while loosening and tightening the blade. It could be easier, but once in place, the blade is solidly attached. Making straight cuts was easy enough, and the blade zips through pine, but lining up angled cuts takes a bit of guesswork and care. Again, my old circular saw, the Ryobi, went through my scrap Brazilian cherry surprisingly well, but the Dewalt was barely slowed. Of course, this was with a different blade, and in real use I'd have chosen a blade designed for a smoother, less splintery cut. Still impressive.The reciprocating saw is comfortable with rubberized handholds. Good to have given the vibrational beating one's hands take with long sessions of reciprocating. Saw blade attach easily enough, although not as quickly as with my Ryobi. I'm a big fan of using reciprocating saws with Milwaukee green blades for yard work involving quick tree pruning of green limbs. Regardless, be sure you purchase some reciprocating saw blades as this set doesn't have any. I took it and a green blade out to the backyard and had some fun lopping off 3 inch branches, and nearly laughing at how easy it was. (I love reciprocating saws.)And finally, the flashlight is nice. It is an LED, thankfully, and quite bright but not obnoxiously so. The beam is wide for an LED. The huge battery makes it a bit oddly balanced, but it also makes it stand by itself well, and it has a convenient twisting head with a ring to hang it as needed.The tool I miss from this pack is an impact driver, and it might be a better value to buy the somewhat more expensive 5 piece kit with an impact driver as the driver is quite expensive as a standalone purchase. Still, the separate impact driver does come with another charger and two half size batteries, and a half size battery would be valuable to have for lightweight projects or for leaving attached to the flashlight. The 20-V MAX ecosystem also includes a compact drill driver, a premium drill driver, a rotary drill, and a right angle drill. As far as I can tell, Dewalt is not packaging any of these as tool only, meaning you will have to buy additional batteries/chargers along with the additional tools, at considerable expense. I hope this changes.I wish Dewalt provided a more rigid case than the provided duffle, as it is I will probably buy a different tool bag. Also, the battery is not as easy as my Ryobi to use; the battery takes more conscience effort getting it in the charger and onto a tool, although it's easier to remove. And the Ryobi has little touches like a bracket to keep a screwdriver bit on the drill or a bubble level.It's cool seeing these very tools used on Mythbusters, or on This Old House.I'm very impressed by this collection. So much so that when I needed a router over the weekend, I grabbed the Dewalt compact router with very little extra thought. So, highly recommended for those with big projects.

20 Volt is great but Saws included in this kit are cheaper versions

I've been using these tools for over a year now.I have been very happy with all the tools in this kit up till this week.The recipocating saw started make loud noises and killing batterys very quickly the other day.So I took it apart thinking it needed some grease. What I found was that the gears stripped inside the housing.After doing some research I found that both the saws included in this kit are cheaper versions of the stand alone tools.Had I known this I probably would not have purchased this kit.The Flashlight and drill are great, Circular saw has a stamped baseplate instead of cast and the reciprocating saw lackes an adjustable foot,has a shorter stroke and has an inferior gear mechanism inside.If you are looking for a quality reciprocating saw stay away from this kit.

I've used Dewalt kits borrowed by friends over the years, and they're fantastic. They're sturdy, last all day, and were great for home use. Now that I have my own set of tools, it's time to drill and saw. These are typical of the Dewalt tools I've used over the years. They feel indestructible.The hammer drill was amazing to use. It drove screws in effortlessly. In fact, it made so effortlessly I felt like I needed to find more screws. It rocked. In a way, it's more of a drill that I'll ever need. I honestly felt overwhelmed by it.The circular saw isn't meant for people like me who don't need a heavy set of tools. The blade chewed through 2x4's. And the blade was easy to install and remove - and it didn't feel like it was going to come out. Again, it's too much of a saw for casual or light use.Now, the reciprocating saw was by far my favorite. It felt solid in my hands and after use in my parents' back yard and garage, I didn't feel any numbness or tingling in my hands, which was my major worry. It's got a great grip and it made cutting effortless.The flashlight was pretty decent. It made a nice worklight. Not too bright, a good wide area. It stood on the ground and didn't move. The bag is the only seemingly "cheap" part of the kit. I'm worried about tools slamming against each other and possibly damaging the blades. It does have interior pockets to keep the charger and batteries separate.Overall, this is way overkill for an apartment dweller, but this is a great set of tools for homeowners. The set has inspired me to take on some home improvement projects. For the price, it's a great investment. Although I'd listen to reviewer Glenn Howes' advice and consider the DEWALT DCK555X 18-Volt XRP 5 Tool Combo Kit - Hammer/Recip/Circ. Saw/Impact/Light set if you need an impact driver.
