I'VE BEEN USING MAKITA PRODUCTS FOR MANY YEARS. I WAS SURPRISED HOW POWERFUL THE DRILL WAS. THE PRICE WAS WORTH THE MONEY.

I bought this to replace one of my two old 12V Makita drills. I originally went with Makita because it was the most compact of the 12V battery drills at that time so I could use it in the tight spaces I frequently encounter during my various construction projects. The only weakness was the relatively short run-time of the 1.3 amp hour battery, a problem finally fixed by the introduction of the new 2.0 Ah battery. But when one of my 12V Makitas finally wore out I decided to move up to Makita's 14.4V model since is was actually a bit smaller than my old 12V units. So far I love this drill. As expected it has more power, the battery seems to run longer and the chuck is a huge improvement over that on the 12V model. And, like my old 12V drill it handles well and can be used in tight spaces.The light that came with the kit was a real bonus. As some have noted the adustable lighthead seems a bit flimsy but I expect if you don't drop it from too high it should last a long time. I find myself using the light all the time and most all of my old flashlights are now headed for the Goodwill. It is more convenient to hold than a flashlight, puts out a much brighter beam with a nicer light spread, and the battery makes a great stand when you want to set it down to light something you are working on. Being 14.4 volts instead of the average 3 to 6 volts of a flashlight explains the much brighter light output. My only complaint is I wish the adjustable light head could be set at any angle instead of the three fixed settings it comes with. The beam provides a very even spot with surprizing reach out beyond 200 feet. And around the spot is a very even and fairly bright and broad flood beam so, unlike most all flashlights, you have light spread over a broad area while still having a spotlight. And the battery goes a long time before it needs to be recharged.I won't say that this is necessarily the best drill in its class as I have no experience with other brands except for Craftsmen, which was a big disappointment. My loyalty to Makita stems from the two plus decades of reliable use and long service life they have provided. Their adequate power in a tough, relatively compact size make them my choice for the kinds of uses I need a drill for. For me the fact that other manufacturers are now offering very compact and powerful drills tells me Makita had the right idea in the first place.
