Got What I Paid For

Got this set on a deep discount from a popular home improvement store several years ago. This is a Ryobi One Plus 18 volt power tool kit. it includes a drill, work light, circular saw, and a hand vacuum like a Dust Buster. You also get two batteries and the charger. As a promotional bonus, we also got a free reciprocating saw that uses the same battery. Not a bad deal considering what you are getting! I will review the Sawzall separately.The drill is an 18 volt model with a 24 position clutch (plus a drill lock setting which locks the clutch) system and a keyless chuck that will take up to a 1/2 inch drill bit. This has two speeds, a low setting for driving screws and a high setting for drilling, and there is also a lock switch on the top of the handle that locks the trigger when you put it in your tool belt or tool box to keep it from getting turned on accidentially. The handle itself is pretty comfortable and offers good grip thanks to the soft textured rubber palm pad. As a bonus, the base of the drill also has a magnetic pad to put screrws so you don't lose them, but it doesn't work very good. The magnet isn't very powerful and the screws rattled off.Overall, the drill is pretty good, plenty of power for most jobs, but don't expect it to perform like a more expensive drill. It won't go blow-for-blow with a high-end drill like Milwauke, Bosch, or Dewalt of the same voltage because of their more powerful motors. For what it is, it's great and will do pretty much what you want it to. I've used it to drive in 3-inch deck screws into fir no problem, drill into concrete without too much trouble, and bore 1/2 inch holes without a lot of difficulty. Drilling some steel is a pain though. I wished it turned higher rpm's on the fast setting for drilling metal. I know that would help it a lot. The battery didn't last as long as I hoped either. It was tired after a half day of occasional use. This is also heavy, heavier than the competition, which causes fatigue. I am a pretty stout guy, but this drill made my hand and wrist tired after a few hours of using it. I was impressed with how durable it is. The exterior is made entirely of plastic, but it just doesn't feel cheap like some other brands, but solidly built. I admit to have thrashed on it a few times, but it shrugged off the abuse and kept going perfectly. The gear train is all metal, the motor is fan-cooled, and it has a dynamic brake that stops the tool from "free wheeling" after you release the trigger. All good features found on more expensive drills.You also get a 6 inch circular saw. It comes with a carbide tipped blade that can be changed out for a different style. The base plate/rip fence is also adjustible up to 45 degrees for angled cuts, and there is a saw guide that clamps onto the plate. The saw is not very powerful for being 18 volts. With a fresh battery it made decent power, but after about 20 cuts in fir 2x4's and 2x6's, I could tell it was getting tired and would bind up or stall mid-cut. Even cutting thin paneling was hard on it. I wished it spun the blade faster, but again, the motor doesn't seem to be really powerful. On the plus side, you can do plunge cuts, and it's easy to hold and isn't too heavy.The hand vacuum works so-so. It looks like a Dust Buster, sounds like a Dust Buster, and works like a Dust Buster, but it isn't. I think it's powered by the same motor as the saw and drill because it needs to be more powerful. The 18v. battery should deliver better suction, but it did work good enough to pick up small brad nails, small pebbles, sawdust, drywall dust, dirt, and crumbs. I did notice that the battery discharged a little slower with this, probably because it isn't working as hard as the other tools. It is relatively light and comfortable to hold as well. Emptying the dust catcher is simple: push a button at the top and it falls away. Cleaning the filter is also pretty easy. This would be great for a work bench where sawdust, metal filings, or turnings accumulate.The final piece is the work light. It uses the same 18 volt battery as the others, and I was impressed with the light output! I could shine a beam about 150 feet and light up a garage pretty good. It illuminated my work area great, and the pivoting head made it easy to aim the light in just about every direction. It works by a pistol-style trigger, which is also good, and it is easy to hold. The battery lasts for a good while as well. The only issue is that the lens gets really hot after a while and can burn you if you touch it. A guard over the lens would have been good.The charger has two modes, one for fast-charging a partially drained pack, and a regular mode for recharging a drained pack. I couldn't really tell a difference between the two though. It took about 5 hours to fully charge a drained pack, and a few hours for a partially drained one. About the norm for digital chargers.Hpwever, because these are Nicad-type batteries (unlike the nickle-metal hydride and new lithium-polymer packs), you do need to exercise descretion and be sure to "dump" the batteries before charging them. Even if the tool won't work, there is still juice in them, and charging a "dead" Nicad pack gives it "memory" which basically means it eventually won't take a full charge. I use the work light to dump them. Turn on the light and wait for the light to go out then charge it.I have noticed that the packs are getting worn out and won't take a full charge, which isn't uncommon for batteries of this type. The newer lithium-polymer and trusty nickle-metal hydride packs last a lot longer (but are more expensive).So that's it. This is a good general purpose tool set. The saw is very poor

The drill and flashl;ight are fine, but the saw is extreemly poor. It requires a full battery charge and wears down the battery pronto. It is virtually useless. I woun't recommend the saw to anyone, even a DIY.

This package has been a big disappointment. I bought it to replace an 18v Craftsman drill, light, and reciprocating saw setup for which the batteries wore out.Cons:- It comes with only one battery- The battery charger isn't wall-mountable like most, it's a cheap cord with a small battery cap.- The fully charged battery doesn't make it through even small projects. My craftsman batteries lasted at least 4x longer.- The skill saw is a joke. Anything bigger than 1x2 will be a struggle.I have a lot of other complaints about this package, but the battery issue is a show stopper.
